Jesus said “If you love me, keep my commandments”

Jesus said “If you love me, keep my commandments”.  The question is “What were His commandments?”

Mat 22:34-40  But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, gathered themselves together.  (35)  One of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, testing him.  (36)  “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?”  (37)  Jesus said to him, ” ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.‘  (38)  This is the first and great commandment.  (39)  A second likewise is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.‘  (40)  The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

  • ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind’
  • ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.

Joh 14:15-27  If you love me, keep my commandments.  (16)  I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever,-  (17)  the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive; for it doesn’t see him, neither knows him. You know him, for he lives with you, and will be in you.  (18)  I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you…  (27)  Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

He leaves us His peace not a list of rules.  Our good works are the outworking of His Spirit in us… they are not our effort to do good deeds for His approval. Our best works are like filthy rags (Isa 64:6) unless they are the fruit that originates out of the Vine of Christ.

1 Jn 5:2-3  By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep his commandments.  (3)  For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. His commandments are not grievous.

His commandments are not burdensome.

We abide in Him… We can never do good for Him… He will produce fruit in and through us… We are clay vessels that He fills with the treasure of His Spirit.

2 Co 4:7  But we have this treasure in clay vessels, that the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God, and not from ourselves.
